A beautiful, handmade Christmas decoration from the Baltic region which is designed to sit on a shelf. Nisses, tomtes or tonttus are magical creatures from Scandinavian folklore. They are associated with Christmas and the winter solstice. A nisse is often described as having a long, white beard and wearing a conical cap in red or another bright colour. Whilst this figure has a red cap, she is instead a cute, little girl with her song sheet.
Nisses are seen as the protectors of the household and its animals. Tradition says that they carry out jobs secretly for the people with whom they live, rather like the elves in the fairy story "The Elves and the Shoemaker". In return they expect a bowl of porridge with butter at Christmas.
This figure has a height of 10 cm and is made from wood and felt. The face is hand painted. The nisse figure comes with a slice of branch on which to sit as an alternative to a shelf.
This figure is intended as a decoration and is not suitable as a toy.
