A handmade Christmas decoration from Germany which has been beautifully crafted. Nisses, tomtes or tonttus are magical creatures from Scandinavian folklore. They are associated with Christmas and the winter solstice. A nisse is often described as having a long, white beard and wearing a conical cap in red or another bright colour. This kindly figure is carrying a lantern to light the way.
Nisses are seen as the protectors of the household and its animals. Tradition says that they carry out jobs secretly for the people with whom they live, rather like the elves in the fairy story "The Elves and the Shoemaker". In return they expect a bowl of porridge with butter at Christmas.
This figure has a height of 12 cm and is made from wood and felt. The face is hand painted.
